A Salute to Our True Heroes [ 5th August, 2010 ]

 

Our Alumni has organized a programme started with the inauguration with the lighting of the lamp by our Chief Gust, Deputy GOC Bengal Area, Brigadier A.K. Sharma.

The students of Birla High School began the programme with a melodious Tabla Tarang. After the inaugural address by the President and the Chairperson, Ms. Mukta Nain, a senior member of the Alumni Shri B.K. Jhawar unveiled the library edition souvenir which contained articles on the history of India from the day of Independence till the date that our currency Rupee got a symbol becoming only the 5th Currency in the world to be given a globally recognised symbol. Special mention of the students, teachers and our editor Mr. Sachin Saraff who are credited with making this souvenir  a possibility.

The mood for the occasion was set by the patriotic songs sung by the students before programme director Mr. Atul Churiwal took over and introduced the 3 PVC awardees (Shri Bana Singh, Shri Yogender Singh Yadav and Shri Sanjay Kumar.) and read out a citation in their honour. One our senior most members and the reception committee Chairman for the programme Shri Suresh Kumar Neotia felicitated the awardees with a shawl, citation and a monetary token.

The house was inspired on hearing the experiences of all the 3 awardees from themselves and the morning lay witness to a host of patriotic emotions in the audience. The speeches of the 3 men were marked with applause and tears from listeners.

This was followed by enthralling speeches by the Chief Guest and Shri Neotia. The Vote of Thanks was proposed by the Vice President Shri C.K. Karnani and the programme ended with the National Anthem.

11th Inter Institutional L.N. Birla Debate [ 10th July, 2010 ]

 

The 11th L.N. Birla Inter Institutional Debate finals were held on 10th July 2010. The motion in the opinion of the house was that the "Media is the prime cause of violence in today's society". Students from Birla High School Boys & Girls, La Martiniere for Boys, St. Xavier’s Collegiate School, Modern High School, Calcutta Boys School and Don Bosco Park Circus took part. The Chief Guest of the occasion was Ms. Beth Payne, the Consulate General of the United States of America, Kolkata. The day was inaugurated by a welcome address by Shri S.K. Birla, followed by the Chief Guest. The lighting of the lamp commenced the debate. Ms. Sharmila Bose, Principal of Birla High School for Girls was the esteemed Chairperson. The students debated with vigour and conviction. The motion was defeated by a large majority. Birla High School for Girls won the award for the best team and Neha Jain was adjudged Best Speaker. You will be glad to know that one of the judges was one of our Committee Members Mr. Atul Churiwal. Like every year the alumni presented a trophy to the best speaker, Neha Jain.

BHS Prize Distribution 2010 [ 7th July, 2010 ]

 

Birla High School had a felicitation programme for the students, who have excelled in the CBSE Board Examinations on the 7th of July, 2010. 11 students were honoured by the school management and the Birla High School Alumni. The alumni presented the students with Crossword gift vouchers worth Rs. 11000. A special mention is due for a student, Venkat Khandelwal who suffers from an eye disease which disables him from seeing anything beyond 2 inches from his eyes; he cannot even study for more than an hour at a stretch but has yet received 85% in his examinations.

Career Counselling 2010 [ 24th June, 2010 ]

 

On the verge of completing their high school years the students of this era face a perplexing question, one which will decide their future enterprises. The decision of choosing the precise career is a mammoth task on which many wayward students often lose their sense of direction. Birla High School Alumni for its “Career Counselling Session 2010” invited some of the lumbering giants from their respective fields to enlighten the students of Birla High School and guiding them to a smarter and more endowing career. The event was held on the 24th and 25th of June, 2010. The inaugural speaker was Mr. Rishad Medora who gave a very informative speech on studying law. Mrs. Smita Kapoor was next to capture the students’ interest with her enlightening talk on Finance. The first speaker after the break, Mr. Deepak Khaitan, an old boy of the school, along with his team gave a presentation of being a Company Secretary. Dr. Alka Jayaswal discussed on perhaps the most anticipated topic, that is, studying abroad. Mr. Nondon Bagchi, the most eagerly awaited speaker for the day, did not disappoint and spoke on one of the topics closest to student hearts, music.

On the second day, first to take the stage was Mr. Aanton Mookerjee, describing details in great details the joy of advertising in his witty and smart manner, followed by Mr. Charanpreet Singh, a management guru. Delivering to the students the skills required by an individual to be a successful entrepreneur, his talk was extremely influential. Capt. Anirban Chakraborty spoke next about the thrills of aviation and the zeal of thrusting yourself to the zenith of the sky. Finally the day ended with Mr. Jai Prakash Agarwal taking the podium, talking about an empowered career in architecture. After a brief interactive session the day ended on light note with all the students well informed about where there lives may lead them.
